 אודות התערוכה 

כחבר קיבוץ בית ניר בחבל לכיש עיסוקו של הרצל אוסטר כקולע סלים הוא יוצא דופן.
ספר גרמני אודות אומנות הקליעה שהתגלגל לידיו לפני כחמישים שנה, שינה את חייו. בתחילה, קלע מנצרים אלא שאחרי זמן מה חיפש חומרים חדשים. כך הגיע אל קולעי הסלים הערבים המשתמשים בחברי זיתים והחל לעבוד בזית ואשחר. אולם עבור אוסטר הלהוט, היבול היה דל ומוגבל לעונת המסיק. בחיפושיו אחר חומר נגיש ורב עונתי, הגיע לערבה החקלאית הנפוצה באירופה. שם יש מסורת מפוארת של קליעה עוד מימי האימפריה הרומית עת שמשו הסלים לחקלאות, בניה, אחסון וקישוט.

כאוטודידקט, חופשי מכבלי מסורת, תרבות ונוסטלגיה הקשורות בקליעה, קל לאוסטר להתחקות אחר חומרים ארצישראליים. וכך, לפני כעשרים וחמש שנים בעת ביקור בקיבוץ מעגן בעונת הגדיד, נפעם נוכח האפשרות ששרביטי התמרים (סנסנים) נטולי הפירות יכולים להוות חומר חדש לעבודה. אוסטר הוא הראשון שהשתמש בסנסנים לקליעה. עד להמצאתו שמשו הסנסנים כמטאטים, חוטים ונפות. הסלים והפסלים של אוסטר הם שילוב פראי, מקורי, מחוספס ולא שגרתי של חומר גלם קדום, טכניקה ויצירתיות הנארגות לכדי יצירה ארצישראלית-כנענית ייחודית.

Hertzel Auster — The Art Of Basketry — Art in Craft

 About the exhibition 

Hertzel Auster’s profession – basket weaver, is highly unusual as a member of Kibbutz Beit-Nir. An accidental encounter with a German book on the art of weaving changed his life. At first he wove wicker. After a while he searched for new materials. That’s how he found Arab basket weavers using olive ropes and started working with olive and buckthorn. However, for enthusiastic Auster, the crop was meager and limited to the brief harvest season. In his search for an accessible, multi-season material he reached the cultured willow common in Europe. There, a rich tradition of weaving goes back to the Roman Empire where baskets were used for agriculture, construction, storage and decoration.

An autodidact, free from weaving tradition constraints, culture and nostalgia; it is easy for Auster to scout for new materials. Thus, about twenty-five years ago, while visiting Kibbutz Maagan during date harvest season, he was elated by the vision that fruitless palm boughs could provide a new working material. Auster was the first to use palm boughs for weaving. Prior to his invention palm boughs were used as brooms, strings, and sieves. Auster’s baskets and statues are a wild, original, coarse and unconventional combination of an ancient material, technique and creativity weaving into a unique EretzIsraeli-Canaanite creation.
